Introduction
The key to safe blood transfusion is having safe and healthy blood donors. To ensure this, NBTC, DGHS & MOHFW GOI has published the guidelines for blood donor selection and blood donor deferral, 2025.
Salient features of these guidelines:
Blood should be accepted only from voluntary, non-remunerated, low-risk, safe, and healthy donors.
Efforts should be directed towards encouraging and retaining an adequate number of healthy repeat donors.
Blood donors should be appropriately recognised and thanked for their contribution.
